The big question now

is whether lightning will strike twice with its sequel, released last week.

Call me a cynic, but it feels as though these days if you release a film based on a comic book character and it does even “ok” at the box office, you’re going to be doing sequels. (Think “Daredevil”, “Elektra”, Extraordinary League of Gentlemen” for examples of those who didn’t make it back for more… though surprisingly, rumours are that “Ghost Rider” will be back despite the odds… *face-palm*…)

The thing with a comic book sequel is that rarely do things get better second time around, and the best a director should expect (once the studio has muscled around) is that the sequel buy buy levitra vardenafil viagra locally could end up being “more of the same”.

(Yes, “The Dark Knight” is the notable exception, but please don’t talk about “Spider-Man 2″ or “X-men 2″ as cheap kamagra superior sequels… not with you there on either count, despite buy levitra online cheap their box office takings.

I actually fell asleep during Spidey 2, primarily because of Kirsten Dunst’s hideous “romantic face”…)

Iron Man 2 definitely hits all the right marks as a potentially successful comic book sequel – pretty much text-book.

Of course, this isn’t a b

ad thing.

If you enjoyed the first film, you’ll most likely enjoy the second film. For me, it felt about 85% as engaging and/or good as the first one, losing its marks purely in terms of story. Seriously, it’s pretty shelf life of cialis levitra buying hard to beat an origin story anyway, no matter how many new villains and problems you throw at a hero.

The robot action was spectacular, and the issues I had with the first film (i.e. the quite dull climax and final battle) were satisfied greatly in the sequel with a fairly intense battle sequence to finish off the film involving more nasty robots than you could count, and a great deal more collateral damage.

The VFX were definitely on par with the first, and Robert Downey Jnr inhabits his title role so thoroughly I can hardly imagine anyone else ever touching the Tony Stark character again.

I won’t go into the details purchase viagra online | where to buy cialis | order online levitra of the story here, but suffice to say, you pretty much figure it all out in (a) the trailer, or if you missed that (b) the opening title cialis 20 mg dosage sequence. Something involving a dead Russian physicists grown-up criminal son embarking on a mission of revenge against Tony Stark and the industrial-military complex at large. Honestly, it’s Zoloft Online not really important, which is a shame really – I could’ve used a surprise or a twist somewhere, but it never really came. (Side note : the trailer also gives away what could’ve been the coolest moment of the film, involving Iron Man’s temporary back-up suit. Damn those trailer-edit guys.)

The main thing which lacked for me (besides anything unpredictable, story-wise) were that there were quite a few new characters introduced who we felt like we were supposed to know by the end, but didn’ t really ge

t to know very well. Scarlet Johansson for instance… sure, she looked deliciously slinkly and pouty as buy generic viagra usual, but we only really caught the briefest idea of who she was and what she was all about, despite her being a major supporting character in the film.

Perhaps if I’d read the comics I’d know her back story, but for the average cinema-goer, I don’t think that’s good enough.

Same goes for our main characters – fitting in character-introduction time on screen left little time for much in the way of character development with the characters we got to know last time around, especially given they’d beefed up the action sequence time quite a bit whilst still keeping the film about the same length as the first (2 minutes shorter in fact).

Still, these types of issues are irrelevant when dealing with a Buy singulair online film such as Iron Man 2.

You go watch these things to see cool billionaires flying around in their robot suits blowing bad guys up and saving the world, as loudly and CG-filled as possible, which is precisely what Iron Man 2 delivers.

Definitely a film to see on the big-screen, and hooray – they didn’t try to convert it to 3d-stereo, so you can enjoy it in the 2 D’s it was originally designed to be viewed in without those pesky glasses.

Ka-Boom.

Weekend April 30 – May 2 : Get on up… http://www.sydnerati.com/foodwine/weekend-april-30-may-2-get-on-up/ http://www.sydnerati.com/foodwine/weekend-april-30-may-2-get-on-up/#comments Thu, 29 Apr 2010 22:32:25 +0000 Demis http://www.sydnerati.com/?p=826 Looking around the various things the city has to offer this weekend, apart from the continuing Comedy Festival, there does seem to be an awful lot on pertaining to beer, sports and the wearing of kilts.

Kilts?

Don’t get me started about the humble kilt. I’d wear mine all the time if it were something I could get away with at work without constant ridicule – and with full “traditional” under-attire of course! If you’re partial to the cool updraft yourself, then check out Scotland The Brave at the Opera House tomorrow

night.

(Funnily enough I used to tour with that show a few years ago, and there was this one weekend where everyone wearing a kilt – including the digified silver-haired conductor, soloists, pipers and all – went traditional after much heckling from myself

and a core group of rabblers.

My only advice is to try to get the front row – it’s a very high stage from there and you may get more than your moneys worth.)

Ok, so bagpipes may not be your cup of tea, however just around the corner in the Studio, the Beer Diva : Journey Of Discovery where to buy cialis without prescription could be more to your taste. I’m not buy generic acomplia entirely sure how this event works, but from what I can tell you get to drink a bunch generic zithromax of different types of beer while they are described, celebrated and elevated to high art through a combination of taste, music, animation, culture, what is cialis used for philosophy and allegedly, also a good helping of chocolate. This show was made for you.

There’s another great new produce market thingy kicking off this w cialis buy viagra online discount | buy cialis cialis | buy levitra online cheap 100mg pills without prescription eekend with the Sydney Sustainable Markets at Taylors Square tomorrow. This will be the first one for this bunch of organisers, so give them a good turn out, and in return take home a woven-environmentally-friendly-basket-load of organic/sustainable/good-karma buy cialis online cheap local fruit, vegies, meats and goodies.

Of course all that music, beer, kilt and organic sausage is probably going to be too much for some folks more keen on head-thumping and robots blowing each other up…

The Buy fulvicin cheap levitra online target=”_blank”>Sydney Swans vs Brisbane Lions game is on Saturday (6pm) at the SCG, and no doubt should be a pretty intense game given the home-town crowd eager for some fresh Queensland carnage.

Then there’s Iron Man 2, out yesterday, which I caught last night. There’s a review buy n viagra coming to these very pages early next week, but without spoiling it for anyone, if you were a fan of the first one, the sequel is totally worthy. Not “blows you out of the park, better than the first one”, but definitely “more of the same” class of sequel, which is perfectly low price levitra ok with me. And if you’re a comic book fan, make sure you stay til after the credits for a cool little Marvel easter egg….

Review : Kick-Ass http://www.sydnerati.com/film/review-kick-ass/ http://www.sydnerati.com/film/review-kick-ass/#comments Sun, 18 Apr 2010 22:17:09 +0000 Demis http://www.sydnerati.com/?p=798 I’m sure I’m not the first reviewer to tag the new Mathew Vaughn film Kick-Ass as being “Superbad meets Kill Bill : Volume 1“.

It’s got all the winning formulae from order viagra both those films, for all the good right reasons, and mingles them together into the perfect combination of geek-comedy and ultra-violent-action to scratch that very particular kind of itch. And by that itch, I mean this is a film that will most likely include fans of things like the buy prescription drugs online without prescription Buffy q buy cialis online universe, Sin City, anything Tarantino as well as most of the new-millennium teen comedy genre (the likes of which you’d normally how to get cialis Order Kamagra without a prescription find Seth Rogan or Michael Cera hanging out in).

The story basically follows an average nobody kid, really into his comic books, who decides to see what woul d ha

ppen when he put on a dodgy homemade superhero costume and head out on the streets of New York to save the world. He has no powers, no training, no fancy toys, viagra natural and understandably gets his ass hammered pretty hard, while in the process becoming an overnight cialis ordering shop zithromax internet celebrity after h is first triumphant encounter

is put up on YouTube.

The rest of what follows involves him getting tangled up with a couple of other nobody-superheroes in their revenge-trip against some local mafia mobsters….

Sounds pretty tame, but for this type of film, it’s executed fairly well and fluently (apart from an oddly dead-boring patch for about 20 minutes, two-thirds of the way through).

But what really pushes the film over the edge is not the titular character played by Aaron Johnson, but his pint-sized supporting character Hit-Girl played by Chloe Moretz (who you’ll low price levitra remember best as the plucky opinionated younger sister in 500 Days of Summer). She completely steals the show, and part of me was wishing the entire film

was about her character and not the nerdy teens.

Why?

She’s a 10yo killing machine who swears like a trooper and dispatches pretty much every bad guy in the film in an abnormally violent buy viagra online discount way – violent in a way that even if we were watching an adult in a QT film do the same thing we’d wince, but coming from a 10yo…. awesome.

And by “swears like a trooper”, I’m not talking your regular Hollywood tameness : F-bombs are nothing for Hit-Girl, dropping the C-bomb itself very early into her screen buy buy cialis pills generic viagra viagra | buy cialis domain | buy generic levitra online time.

By far one of the most entertaining characters on screen in a long time, Hit Girl slays this film, leaving even veterans like Nicolas Cage (as her Father) scrambling to keep up with her on screen.

Honestly, this isn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen, and even after an hour and a half of laughs I was still feeling like I’d had an average-yet-entertaining movie experience.

At least, until the finale.

Give Kick-Ass the time it deserves to set up the last 20 minutes of the film. Yes, the romance is entirely unbelievable and a passe departure from the comic-book source material.

Yes, some of the violence early on is decidedly fake, and yes, McLovin’ isn’t that awesome as the pseudo-nemesis in the film.

But the final fight sequence, as in Kill Bill, is brilliant enough to allow wading through the mediocrity of a lot of the rest of the film, and for me, completely pulls the rest of the film right onto a path heading toward Cult Film status.

Definitely worth a look, though if you’re tempted to take any youngsters along with you (since there’s a 10yo character in the film after all…) do think again, unless you’re quite happy with them yelling C**T around your house for the next week trying to slice your legs off with their ninja swords.

Somehow the year kicks into full gear, no-one is complaining about “where summer has gone” anymore, and finally we can start pulling out our fashion layers in preparation for the winter and the Autumn wet-spells.

For the serious film buff, this depressing month or so is a time to clean out cluttered cupboards, take up knitting (or perhaps cross-stitch) and learn how to bonsai.

Not me. I’ve developed buy viagra cheap | q buy cialis online | levitra buying a tactic, and it’s so simple I’m kicking myself I’d never thought of it before.

See all you do is exclusively see mainstream ( potentiall

y crappy) blockbuster stuff during December/January then save all the Oscar-nominated quality dramas etc. for the Dark March/April period. Because let’s face it – the studios themselves save all the best stuff up for Oscar Season, neglecting these other times of the year, so why shouldn’t we take it upon ourselves to bring a bit of balance back to the cinema calendar?

Now is the time to hit the cinemas to see any of the award-season goodies you might have missed.

You should probably get out there in the next week or so, as the blockbuster season seems to be starting early with films like Clash of the Titans out later in the week, meaning the quality dramas will be getting squeezed onto smaller and smaller screens until they drop out of cinemas entirely a few weeks from now…

In no particular order, the goods that are still out there Buy nortriptyline you should try to catch :

Precious
110 buy viagra in san diego mins, still playing at Dendy

I cheap diet pills online actually saw this one last night – a worthy Academy award winner of both the Screenplay Based On Published Material and buy clomid pct Best Supporting Actress categories, Precious is a fairly depressing yet hopeful tale of an uneducated, pregnant, incest/violence-battered 16yo African-American girl, calmly and quietly getting her life together her way in her own time. The main character is 100% believable (… a newcomer literally pulled from the streets to play the roll) and while the film goes to some dark places, it doesn’t go so dark (i.e. Von Triers films for instance) that you want to walk out, and overall is quite consistent (…though perhaps a little exaggeratedly “Oprah-Empowered-Woman” acomplia prices in terms of its sentimentality levels). Definitely worth a look.

The Hurt Locker
131 mins, still on screens everywhere

In case you hadn’t heard, this one pretty much wiped the floor clean at the Oscars, with most of the major categories including Best Picture. Whether it is indeed worth that particular accolade, I’m not so sure, but it is still a technically excellent, thoroughly engaging film which gives you a peek inside a different world inside a world, namely the US army guys who defuse improvised explosive devices in modern-day Iraq. The characters are all very believable with more depth than you’d expect to see in your average film set in a war-zone. The film basically follows the course of one mans tour of service, going from tense bomb scene to tense bomb scene, supported by a cast of random cameos and a lingering message once the film is over. I caught this one on a plane flight before the hype had ramped up about it and definitely found it a worthy 2 hours of my life spent…

The Blind Side
129 mins, Event cinemas has a few sessions left per day… will probably be gone after this week.

If you’d have asked me a couple of years ago if I’d ever consider Sandra Bullock would be an Oscar contender let alone an Oscar winner for a dramatic performance, I’d probably laugh, then frown, then slap you in the face for such blasphemy.

But sure enough, here she is in The Blind Side, playing a kind-hearted Mom who takes in the main character, a homeless kid with all the makings of a great football player, and helping him stay on track and realise his full potential. To be honest, this isn’t my kind of film, at all, but both the major performances are good enough to have garnished such high praise and attention, and for that, I’m at least quite curious… It’s been a long time since Speed after all…

Avatar 3d
162 mins, all the megaplexes still have it, cialis online buy plus Imax.

Yes, it’s still going. I’m actually in a fairly sombre, cynical post-Avatar mood about this film now, having seen the indelible mark it has made on mainstream cinema (…everything is 3d now… even crappy, inappropriate stuff that really doesn’t need to be, and the 3d is being done poorly! Aaarggh! *head explodes*), but I’ll still stand by my original comments and say : if you have not seen Avatar in 3d yet, then you really should while you still can.

Purely for the experience and to see exactly what the fuss is about all this 3d clap-trap.

There’s no way you could have avoided working out exactly what the story is by now even if you haven’t seen the film, so you’re in for no surprises there, but the effects themselves are so phenomenal, even if you don’t normally give a hoot buy cialis soft about effects, you’re going to be blown away.

A Single Man
100 mins, Dendy

I always love seeing Colin Firth in roles where he’s not playing Mr Darcy. Seriously, that guy was great as everyone’s favourite “bathes-while-clothed” Victorian heart-throb, but it’s nice to see that every time it looks like he’s typecast himself again, he pulls out a completely different role, such as in A Single Man. In this, he plays a gay man back in 1962, still grieving over the death of his partner 8 months earlier, whom the family of the deceased would not even let him attend the funeral of.

Oh, and yes, he’s planning on committing suicide, and the film follows him through his last day of cleaning up his affairs in preparation for his worldly departure. Surrounded by a cast of top notch actors (including Julianne Moore), it is Firths buy cialis prescription BAFTA-Award-winning performance which really pushes this one out from the crowd.

the other jobs that go on in darkened rooms for months on end after shooting finishes.

But if you’ve got zero skills, where do you start?

Why not be a movie extra? It’s easier than you think to get into, and with a bit of luck, you could be hanging out on the set of a new X-men movie with Hugh Jackman or being mowed down by an axe-wielding psychopath in a low-budget horror schlock-fest…

I did it a few years back; had an awesome couple of days running around a huge set built on an old farm dressed up as an Amish man in the 1850′s, complete with a very dapper neck-beard, vest and barn-building duties. The hours were long (4:45 am start), the pay was ok (considering I had nothing better to do that week anyway) and the food was regular, plentiful and tasty.

While on set you get to see how unglamorous the whole thing really is, but at the same time get a little bit of insight into exactly what goes into the film-making process at that particular step. Plus, if you’re lucky, you could even wind up getting picked out of the crowd on cialis cheap the day as a featured extra and potentially get your name in the credits (as did I…)

Sounds like fun?

The first thing you need to do is sign up with a few agencies who provide actors and extras to film, tv and commercials.

Places like Talentbank, MCTV and Extras are a good place to start so far as established agencies (though watch for those potential upfront/listing fees!). If your bar isn’t quite so high and just want to get involved at any level – most likely without much (if any) pay – sites such as Star Now – Casting Buy Doxycycline Online Calls often list Sydney film/tv extra jobs, and paid corporate gigs even turn up occasionally on standard recruitment sites like any other job.

If you don’t think you’re the hottest, skinniest, sexiest person on the block, you don’t need to be worried. At the end of the day, casting agents are often looking to fill up their quota of extras with a good cross section of people from whatever the setting is, and no matter what your body type, they’ll probably take you.

And if you have something particularly stand-out like a crazy haircut or body art, you may be in for even more luck, as many crowds often call for “token freaks”, the more out-

there the better.

Just don’t hold your breath.

Once you sign up with these places, you might not hear from them for a long time. But like the saying goes, you have to be in it to win it, and if you sign up with a few places then drop them the occasional reminder you exist, you’re bound to get on set eventually.

And who knows… perhaps you’ll be the next big thing? Or at the very least, an unconvincing-looking Amish man with a full-stomach and $500 in your pocket…
