Forgotten urban treasure : the public library

Back in 1994 I borrowed out a book from the Indooroopilly Public Library up

in Brisbane, which I read and returned a couple of weeks later. End of story.

Or so it seemed…

Something happened at their end, and the book was pronounced “Unreturned”, and despite my pleas of innocence, the overdue fines started piling up. Eventually I somehow owed the Brisbane City Council $73, and, being a poor student at the time, realised that if I never went back to a public library, I’d never have to pay the fine.

Me and public libraries cheap drugs no prescription were through.

Over a decade and several significant relocations later, I found myself living in Sydney, about 100 metres from a library. Being someone who can’t not generic cialis pills spend an hour browsing (and buying) Dymocks/Abbey/Galaxy/Kinokuniya etc.  every time I’m in the CBD, and one of those guys who spends the $39.95 regardless of whether I know for a fact I’m going to enjoy the book enough to keep it on my shelf later on, it made sense that I explored the other options out there.

It was time; time to open that dusty cave and venture back into the forgotten realm ripe with the stench of 1000 ageing piles of musty paper, guarded by (often fearsomely grumpy) ever-watchful librarians.

Surprisingly, there was no echelon-style worldwide network of library fines (even though for a second I thought that’s what the scanners at the door may be for) . They even allowed me back inside the doors and to the bounty inside.

Fools.

Though while it’s been a couple of years now, and I’m still watching over my shoulder every now and then, waiting for them to catch up with me…

I can’t recommend enough the joys of rediscovering the public library system for yourselves. Contrary to my expectations, they seem to be fairly well stocked with the new stuff as well as a healthy collections of the old. We’re collectively saving a pile of cash by not necessarily letting me loose in Dymocks as my purchasing cialis first choice anymore – with the library so close it’s often easier to quickly check in there for anything first before running out to

the shops.

As a bonus, there’s always the declutter factor as well.

I don’t know about you, but it’s a hell of a lot easier to just keep a pile of books on my bedside table for a few weeks than to keep finding new crannies in our overcrowded bookshelves to stuff newly bought, fairly buy viagra cheap | q buy cialis online | levitra buying mediocre science fiction novels into. Don’t get me wrong – I’m still buying books, but I think as we’re slowly moving toward minimalist and digital, there’s going to be less and less room on my shelves for anything other than books which are worthy of print and binding (as opposed to pulp novels which I’m happy to read off a screen).

One thing though – speaking of all things digital – is that I find the old school shelving system in public libraries a little hard to manage. It’s all fair enough when you know the title you’re looking online where can buy viagra | buy cialis pills | levitra online levitra f or, and easy enough to either find it on the shelf

or use the computer filing thing to tell you where it is.

But when you don’t know what you’re after, I wish they did things like, for instance, have the fiction sections divided into genres, which in the age of online browsing and databases, is the logical way our minds tend to work these days, rather than scattering all fiction together sorted by author alone. (I know, I know… some authors cross over, but I’m just saying…)

In these dying days before we discover that Apple has reinvented buy viagra in san diego books with its rumoured tablet device and possibly a new Books category on the iTunes store, it’s worth getting in and checking out your local best where do you buy viagra price cialis cheap for cialis library. And hey, if you don’t read books – there’s always the free DVD’s (even movies?!) and magazines to keep you occupied…
