It’s Oscars time again, and this weekend will see hundreds cinema-freaks catching up on any of the films they missed out on leading up to Monday’s awards ceremony.
Most of the big ones are still out and available on a lot of screens, because to be honest, there isn’t a heap else of exciting stuff to do around Sydney this weekend. Maybe it’s the Mardi Gras after-glow? Maybe we’re finally in that lull after all the big summer music festivals have finally passed?
That’s not to say there aren’t a few good random treats for you over the weekend :
Filmy bits :
If you’re out on a Best Picture Award hunt, then Event Cinemas (i.e. formerly Greater Union) seems to have packed most of them back in way past their expiry. Avatar, The Hurt Locker, The Blind Side and Up In The Air are all on at George Street over the weekend, though if you’re after District 9, Up or Inglorious Basterds, Blockbuster or equivalent is probably your easiest option.
Of course, you’ll have to dodge the crowds swarming to see the much-hyped new Tim Burton version of Alice In Wonderland in 3D. Will definitely check that one out myself, though I don’t know… is it just me, or are we all getting a little sick of Johnny Depp playing a crazy/wacky person in every film? Bring back the Donnie Brasco days I say…
Moonlight Cinema is entering it’s final couple of weeks for the summer season, so now’s your last chance to check it out. If you’re still doing the Oscar-hunt, they have the best-picture-nominee A Serious Man on Tuesday night, though there are still a couple of good films over the weekend.
Other Bits and Pieces :
For a completely different scene, try the 2nd Sydney Tattoo And Body Art Expo, on all weekend at the Sydney Showground (Olympic Park). Packed with live demonstrations (go on… treat yourself to an iron rod through the back of your neck!), featured international artist galleries and talks, plenty of entertainment and the world’s best all assembled under one roof, if you’re in any way interested in body art and mods, this should be your mecca over the weekend.
While you’re at the extreme behaviour, the Tokyo Shock Boys are back in Australia this week, with a Show at the Enmore Theatre on Saturday night. Watch these crazy boys spend a couple of hours on stage beating each other up, doing nutty dares, squirting milk out of their sinuses and generally hurting themselves in the name of acrobatic entertainment, because with an act like that, no doubt they won’t be touring forever
On the other end of the performance spectrum, there’s ImprovActually on tonight at the Roxbury. Chicago legend Bill Arnett is there with a bunch of Sydney’s best improvisers to take one word from the audience and turn it into an entire play for them on the spot. He’s pretty much the best there is out there, so expect quality entertainment rather than this being just another dodgy theatresports night out…
On the other hand if the weather holds up, this would be a perfect weekend to check out a good journey on Wild Walks and smash a bit of fresh air into your lungs, since apart from that, it’s pretty much a lot of sit-down entertainment everywhere else this weekend!
