There are certain times of the day or the week where a particular type of album is what you need to get you through.

Perhaps it’s a Monday morning and you’re trying to snap your motivation on and get your head into work while still wanting to hold onto your weekend vibe as long as possible. Or perhaps it’s the Saturday morning zone-out where you’re in need of some smooth tunes to kick your weekend off without being either too party or too chilled…

Four Tet has always been great at hitting that type of spot for me, and the latest album There is Love In You is no exception.

Having been described by many as a “folktronica” artist, the man behind Four Tet, Keiran Hebden has been carving a name for himself over the last decade putting out his trademark chilled-out organic electronica. His style is easy to spot from a distance, occasionally popping up in unexpected places, such as the unreleased track which plays during the most recent James Bond film.

With There is Love In You he ticks all his usual mellow-yet-uplifting boxes with ease, though I find as a play-it-start-to-end album this project seems to work a lot better as a whole, though possibly could’ve used a different (or extra) final track to really round it off.

It starts with a slow build with opening track Angel Echoes, really kicking you back a notch or two into the right Four Tet headspace, before hitting you with the long but arguably best track on the album Love Cry, a dancier drone which is guaranteed to get you well and truly into a motivated chill-zone.

The only trouble with the album as a whole is the feeling of leaving you wanting by the end – there’s just something about that last track which makes you feel like the album isn’t quite over yet, and I’m often left searching around for more Four Tet (or similar) to keep the vibe rolling along afterward.

Totally fresh sound for the new decade, and music destined to get on your smooth-mood playlist or eventually sitting in the ceiling of hip restaurants everywhere.

If this is your first taste of Four Tet, There is Love In You is certainly a good iniation, especially on a Monday morning after a big weekend…
